He began his career as a freelance artist in the early 1970s. Nagel gained widespread recognition for his work in the 1980s, particularly through his collaboration with Playboy magazine. He created a series of iconic illustrations for the magazine's "Vargas Girl" feature, showcasing his sleek and minimalist style characterized by bold lines, vibrant colors, and a combination of Art Deco and Pop Art influences. One of Nagel's most well-known works is the cover art for the album "Rio" by the new wave band Duran Duran, released in 1982.

His art became synonymous with the visual aesthetic of the 1980s, and he contributed to the visual identity of the era, influencing fashion, design, and popular culture. Tragically, Patrick Nagel passed away at the age of 38 in 1984.

Despite his relatively short career, his artwork continues to be celebrated and recognized for its enduring impact on contemporary art and design.
